WAIMEA – A visitor from the San Francisco Bay area has offered a $500 reward
for information leading to the apprehension and arrest of two males who
assaulted and robbed him while he was visiting the Russian Fort at Waimea on
Wednesday.
“I am hoping that some deserving family on the Westside will
benefit from the reward and that the attackers will be bought to justice,” said
the man who asked not to be named.
The 57-year-old controls systems
engineer was struck on the back of the head and on the legs with a stick, he
said. His wife, an Andrews Air Force Base teacher, was knocked down to the
ground.
The assailants escaped with the man’s fanny pack, which he said
contained nothing of value. Kaua’i police officers were called to the scene and
rendered aid.
The California couple, on their first visit to Kaua’i, said
their attackers appeared to be in their late teens or early 20s. They were
attacked, he said, while his wife was taking a photograph of him.
“I
can’t say enough about the police,” he said. “They were very nice. I don’t
think our local police would have been so helpful.”
Ron Fleet, of the
Visitor’s Aloha Society, brought the couple flowers and tried to assure them
that the incident is not a true reflection of the island.
“Every tour we
took, the guides kept saying Kaua’i is such a nice place you can leave your
doors open. Nothing ever happens, ” the visitor said.
“Well, I would like
them to see my legs. I hate to say it but not everyone here lives Aloha,” he
said.
Lt. Seto of KPD said unfortunately there are increased reports of
robbery this time of year but the attack was unusually bold.
In a separate
incident about 7 a.m. Thursday morning, a 55-year-old Wailua woman was
attacked as she approached the entrance to the Kaua’i Coconut Beach
Hotel.
Police report that she was knocked down and struck on the neck by
two males who attempted to rob her of her handbag. In the altercation the
woman, who refused to let go of her purse, received minor injuries.
The
police have detained two Kapa’a juveniles in that case.
In the Waimea case
the police are looking for an Oriental/ Caucasian male, 17-20 years of age 5
foot, 6 inches with a slim build weighing approximately 120 pounds.
Anyone
who has information related to the attack or knows the identity of the man in
the police composite should contact Crime Stoppers at 241-6787 or Det. Marvin
Rivera at 241-6798.
