Can you remember
when daily life wasn’t quite so predictable? When you didn’t feel so completely
invisible? When all it took was a friendly glance to strike up a conversation
that could easily lead to dinner, a movie, or dancing up a storm?
When
asking someone to dance or saying “yes I’d like to” didn’t have so much riding
on it?
Can you remember what you were like before you or people that you
know got so jaded, cynical, pessimistic, or worse, apathetic about the
man/woman/ date thing? When adventure and maybe even romance was more than a
distant memory?
When you get together with your friends do you complain
about living on “monk island” or that there are “no good men/women” out there?
Do you then stay home or keep to your tight circle of friends never venturing
far from your comfort zone?
What in the world has happened to us? Do we
really need these sheltered cocoons? On the eve of this New Millennium, let’s
step out, kick up our heels and leave this same old same-o behind.
There
are numerous millennium events around the island offering us different venues
for our different tastes. Sistah She’s very talented She Bop band at The
Outrigger has a ticket with my name on it.
And no, hotel events don’t have
to be just for couples. But they will continue to be that way if singles don’t
go.
Even if you decide that New Year’s partying is not your thing, if you
are single and over 40 consider how your social life might just appreciate a
pinch of possibility. Get out there on the dance floor.
Say hello first,
more. Strike up a conversation with that person you keep wondering about.
Answer that personal ad. Invite someone to dinner.
This is not about lonely
hearts club desperados. This is about living life to the fullest and not
getting so settled in our routines, comfort zones and jaded expectations that
brass rings no longer seem to matter. LIFE is a brass ring. Let’s reach for
it!
