MAKAHA, O’ahu — Bethany Hamilton of Princeville won both the shortboard and
longboard divisions for 7-9 year old girls at the 25th Annual Rell Sunn
Menehune Surf Contest held at Makaha Beach on O’ahu recently.
Hamilton, 9,
is a regular at “Kiddies,” the surf spot adjacent to the Hanalei Pier.
The
event is held for surfers 12-and-under.
Sunn was a leading figure in the
world of women’s surfing who passed away following a career as a professional
surfer, lifeguard and promoter of her surfing contest for children.
The
event was held in clean 2-4 foot surf. Hamilton won two new surfboards,
including a special retro 1970s Donald Takayama twin fin collectors
board.
Young Kaua’i Westside surfer Caleb Satterfield took first place in
ages 7-9 bodyboarding.
