The Garden Island and the Zonta Club of Kaua’i are again teaming up with the
community to try and make the holidays a little happier for those in
need.
Every year, the community makes donations to the Zonta/Garden Island
Christmas Fund.
With the help of community agencies, Zonta Club members
identify families who will not have a merry Christmas without our help. Every
day from now until Christmas, The Garden Island will publish stories about some
of our neighbors who could use some assistance. The names have been changed to
protect their privacy but the stories are all actual case histories of people
living on Kaua’i.
Monies collected are used to fulfill their wishes
whenever possible.
Checks and money orders may be sent to Zonta/Garden
Island Christmas Fund, c/o The Garden Island, P.O. Box 231, Lihue HI 96766.
Donations may also be dropped off at The Garden Island office at 3137 Kuhio
Highway in Lihu’e during office hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Because of
space limitations, people are asked to refrain from bringing in used goods.
Monetary donations are preferred.
At the prime age of 32, Kalei is a
young mother of five children (Kekai 10, Kelsey 7, Kainoa 5, Kalama 5 and
Kailee 2).
She has had several misfortunes in life from a very young age.
The fathers (she was married twice) of her young children had their share of
misfortunes and are presently absent from the home. Now, Kalei is attending to
parental duties and responsibilities all by herself.
Recently, the power
in her home was shut-off due to non-payment of bills. They were living by
candles as their source for light for a while. The children wondered why this
was so but were most patient about their situation.
Kalei’s pride is the
smiles that her children have for her and the laughter that they all enjoy as a
family from time to time. This holiday season, Kalei and her children would
enjoy having some new clothes and toys to play among themselves. They enjoy
good home meals but with five children and Kalei to attend to their needs a
good wholesome turkey dinner with trimmings would be appreciated and make them
happy this joyous holiday season.
Warren is a 40 year old, single male who
has a long history of mental illness. He lives a very simple life but enjoys
sports and participates in bowling with his family, and as a spectator for
baseball and football.
Warren is shy and a person of few words. Most of
his basic needs are met with his disability checks. He would be thrilled if he
received new bed linens for his twin bed and a bath set for Christmas.
