HONOLULU (AP) — Thousands of Douglas and Noble fir trees are headed for island
homes following the arrival of the annual “Christmas tree” ship.
More than
half of the 115,000 trees shipped to Hawaii this year from Washington and
Oregon arrived on the Matson container ship Manukai late Friday.
The trees
were released for sale after being inspected by state agriculture
officials.
The officals found two live salamanders and a tree frog among
the fir trees.
Two Matson freighters arrived earlier this month with
smaller shipments of trees for retail-store displays on Oahu and limited
neighbor island retail sales, said Matson vice president and area manager Bal
Dreyfus says.
A smaller, final shipment is due next Sunday, he
said.
The trees look very healthy this year, said Neil Reimer, a state
entomologist.
