Louie’s Luck Is Still Bad
Louie Rego’s luck continues to be bad. As I understand it Louie, inadvertently I am sure, was responsible for that new temporary unplayable water hazard at Wailua Golf Course last Sunday. All of which is certain not to make him very popular with the golfers.
According to the information I have, Louie leased from Lihue Plantation the old Lihue Dairy site, adjoining the first nine of the golf course. The big drainage ditch that runs along the golf course and past the jail flows between the golf course and the Dairy site to the sea.
To reach his leasehold from the Wailua side, Louie built a culvert in the ditch, bulldozed some Kiawe trees in to hold the sand, and then filled over all this to make a road to his property.
The culvert apparently took care of the normal flow of water but could not handle the flood that resulted from the downpour of some 20 inches at Wailua over the weekend.
The culvert proved too small for the huge runoff of flood waters and to make matters worse, debris in the flood closed the culvert. Thus the new road became a dam. The result was the biggest water hazard Wailua golfers have ever seen. The fairways of three, four and five were almost completely flooded.
Cause Is Not Known
The staff at the golf course, unaware of the dam, could not understand the unusual high water. Normally the ditch is capable of carrying off flood waters without too much delay. The big puzzle to the staff was that there appeared to be no flow in the ditch.
Louie’s hard luck hit Saturday night. The heavy downpour at Wailua Saturday night resulted in a huge runoff and with the ditch blocked, the first nine area was flooded. Sunday was to have been the day of final round in the Kauai Invitational Open, with golfers here from all the islands. With the first nine only open to scuba divers, the final round had to be cancelled.
The actual cause of the flooding was not discovered until Monday. The County was informed and apparently action was taken, as at last reports the water was flowing out to sea.
Louie has not heard from the golfers as yet and neither has County Engineer Jerry Kaluna. Jerry probably for the very good reason he has an unlisted phone in his home. Which leads one to wonder how does anyone get ahold of the County Engineer in an emergency. I understand there were a number of people over the past weekend looking for that answer. Probably Mayor Vidinha has the answer.
No Turkey Price Problems
Maui appears to be having some problems in regard to the price of Thanksgiving turkeys. There are reports from Maui that turkeys were selling for 20 cents a pound more than Honolulu. As a result everyone from Mayor Elmer Carvalho to Lt. Governor Tom Gill got into the act, with an assist from the newly elected members of the Maui County Council. Complete investigations ranging from consumer protection hearings to the FBI, appear to be in the cards.
Here on Kauai our politicians can relax. There is no need for them to get similarly excited. Kauai turkey prices were well in line with Honolulu, where j they ranged from 35 to 45 cents a pound. On Kauai] the range was 37 to 45 cents. None of our local merchants will admit making any money on turkeys this year.
So you Kauai housewives the next time you go to the market to shop, smile sweetly at your market man and thank him. He deserves it.
What Rebuttals?
I am not sure if everyone heard Senator Fernandes on KTOH on Monday evening, speaking on the Kauai Community College site selection. Senator Fernandes explained he was on the air to rebutt statements I had made about him, concerning the college site matter.
I heard Senator Fernandes and as near as I can recall, I understood every word he said with one exception. The word I did not understand was “castenize”, or at least that is what the word sounded like to me. It is possible that I misunderstood him.
If he took the air Monday evening to rebutt any statements I made I would like to know that statements, if any, he actually rebutted. He also said he wanted to clear up certain matters. Again I would like to know what did he clear up? Certainly nothing that concerned the selection of the Kauai Community College site.
Something To Rebutt
In order to really clear the air and give Senator Fernandes something definite to rebutt, I will make the following statement: The manner in which the site for the Kauai Community College was selected, was in my opinion, arbitrary, dictatorial, and undemocratic, without any consideration for the need and use of the college and with little or no consideration for the faculty and students.
I have said in the past that Dr. Cockett owes the people of Kauai an explanation for the manner in which the selection was made. Under the present circumstances and with Rep. Baptiste explanation on how the site committee was named I feel that it is more fitting for Senator Fernandes to reply.
Senator Fernandes was on the air over KUAI on Sunday evening, discussing the Kauai Community College site. I did not hear this program. It is my understanding that it was a program on which he answered phoned-in questions.
I did not hear the program so I am in no position to comment on it. I will say that the consensus of those who heard the program and discussed it with me, was that nothing material was given on the site selection. One of the highlights was Senator Fernandes questioning the veracity of Rep. Baptiste statement that he, Senator Fernandes, named the site selection committee, not Dr. Cockett.
