No organized aid was able to reach the stricken families, as the highway bridge-connection was washed away and the road blocked with rocks. “Residents” – about fifty people homeless – slept last night at the former OCD evacuation camp in the hills. The mountains provided elevation-safety in the possible occurrence of another tidal wave.
Tonight they will be housed at the Haena school.
Every building in that section has been either totally or partially damaged.
Damage Is Heavy
Property damages in the Hanalei district number seventeen totally destroyed buildings. Listed are, residences at Haena – George Brown, William H. Rice, Paul Rice, Mrs. Dora Isenberg, William Chandler, Jack Nishimoto, Edwin Laamea, Mrs. May Hanohano; Mrs. Hallie Lydgate at Wainiha (beach-house), Allen Harada, John Kuakua, Edward K. Puulei, Mrs. Keokiana Haumea; other buildings, Haena Pavilion, YMCA Camp Naue, Mormon Church, and the Nakatsuji Store and home.
Homes Moved Inland
Partially damaged residence constructions, totaling nine, in the district, are, at Haena: Mrs. Joe Hashimoto, David Pa, Jacob Maka, Pau Waiule, Semeon Maka, Francis Brown (servant’s quarters and garage completely wrecked but no damage to home), Manji Ouye (damage to yard boys’ cottage only); in Wainiha, Henry Tai Hook, and Mrs. Antone Dutra (building carried from one side of the road to the other).
Haena School has not beep damaged.
Freak incident: The two-story dwelling of Alfred Doiron, located at the Hanalei end of Haena, was not damaged. The Arakaki’s home (quarters for the garden man of the Rice property) was uninjured.
