The Kauai Red Cross chapter under the direction of Charles Harker, president, responded nobly to the call for help. Soon after disaster struck, food, clothing and bedding were on their way to Kalihiwai and Anahola.
In addition, a truckload was sent as far as the demolished Waikoko bridge, to be taken across piece by piece and on to Wainiha for the relief of hard-hit Haena and Wainiha residents.
Refuges from Kalihiwai and Kalihikai are housed at homes and in the Kilauea gym. Anahola refugees are at the Anahola School. Homeless Nawiliwili residents are at the Lihue Christian Church hall.
Many have also gone to stay with friends.
On the west side, those having Kokee residences went to them.
Three truck loads of food were sent to Haea today. It was necessary to carry the supplies across the Wainiha Stream where the bridges were out. The foo situation was acute in this area.
