Fifteen persons are dead or missing as the result of a tidal wave which struck Kauai about six-thirty yesterday morning. Ten are known dead, while the other five who are missing are presumed to be dead without question. Seven persons were injured enough to be hospitalized and at least two hundred are homeless.
Property damage on the island will reach into the hundred thousands. At the present time it is practically impossible to make an estimate of the damage.
North Shore Hit Hardest
The north shore of the island took the brunt of the blow, with Wainiha and Haena suffering the heaviest. Kalihiwai, Moloaa, and Anahola, Wailua, Nawiliwili all suffered heavily. Heaviest casualties occurred at Wainiha and Haena, where eight lost their lives. Five lives were lost at Kalihiwai, one at Kalihikai and one at Nawiliwili. The majority of the injured were at Kalihiwai.
Homes Are Destroyed
The destruction of homes and dwellings along the northside has complicated the situation in regard to providing shelter.
Practically every dwelling in the makai areas of Wainiha, Haena, Kalihikai, Kalihiwai and Moloaa have either been totally destroyed or damaged to an extent that they are uninhabitable.
Those who did escape with their lives in many cases only saved the clothes they were wearing.
With the Waikoko bridge and Wainiha bridges washed out by the waves. Wainiha and Haena were isolated from the rest of the island. To make matters worse all telephone lines were down which meant there was no communication with the stricken area.
Food Carried In
Some relief was given today when Red Cross representatives made their way into the area with food and clothing. It was necessary to carry the supplies into the area in packs, particularly where it was necessary to ford the streams. A county truck caught between the bridges was able to transport material to the Wainiha area. It is understood that the Waikoko bridge has been repaired to the extent that it can be used.
An earthquake of severe intensity in the Aleutian area was responsible for the tidal wave which was the worst in the history of the island.
Water entered most of the Kekaha houses along the beach road, doing varying amounts of damage, but injuring no one. Many families evacuated to safety of Kokee where they had homes.
