Wendall Nonaka & Nestor Cabatan took the top prizes at The Garden Island Racing Association’s, National Hot Rod Assocation’s National Dragster Challenge on August 8 at Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana.
In the Destination Autoworks Pro Et class, Nonaka won the Wally in his 1987 Buick, sponsored by Garage Door Specialty, dialing in at 11.73 running 12.56, with a reaction time of .585, over Tony Kings “Goin’ Bananas” Plymouth Duster.
Tony’s Waimea Canyon Snack Shop sponsored Plymouth, dialng in at 11 seconds went Red.
In the King Auto Center sponsored Super Street class, Rudy Ramos took the win in his 1958 Corvette sopnsored by Ken Silva’s Auto Body, dialing in at 11.73, running a 11:84 at 111.16 mph., over Walt Barnes in his 1994 Mustang, dialing in at 14 seconds.
In the Speedie Lube sponsored Street class, First-place went to Cabatan in his 2000 Honda Accord, dialing in at 16:45, running a 16:58 at 76:14 mph. Second-place went to Oren Anderson in his Mazda Protege 5, dialing in at 16:70, running a 16:84. Rudy and Nestor then went head to head for the Street class Wally with Nestor coming out on top after a red light by Rudy.
In the Junior dragster class, Sheldon Costa continued his assault on the competition by continuing to dominate his division. Costa took top honors in his D. & W. Services dragster, dialing in at 8:35, running a 8:64 at 71.65 mph, followed by Wayne Parraga, who finished in the second slot.
In the Mortorcycle class Jay-R Smith won on his Suzuki 1300 dialing in at 10:00, runing a 12:62 at 91.09 mph. The next race is Saturday night, September 4 at Kaua‘i Raceway Park in Mana, with the gates opening at noon.
