Traversing the globe for maximum results at Ballito Pro

Like moths to a flame, the brightest opportunities for points and cash tend to attract many of the biggest names. That seems to be the case with this week’s QS 10,000 event, the Ballito Pro, which gets under way Monday in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Among the Championship Tour surfers jumping into the fray are Brazilians Wiggolly Dantas, Alejo Muniz and Jadson Andre, Aussies Ace Buchan and Matt Wilkinson and South African local Jordy Smith.

Fiji may not clear up much, but it should be fun

It’s been a weird year. There’s not much of an overarching story line for the current World Surf League season and things might only get foggier once we start seeing some results at this week’s Fiji Pro. Adriano de Souza and Filipe Toledo have developed a decent lead over the rest of the field, but neither has been unbeatable.

Why not? Tati barrels into contention with huge showing at Fiji Pro

The women showed their skills in the big surf as the swell hit Cloudbreak during day two at Tavarua Island. There were some big scores and upsets in rounds two and three and both Tatiana Weston-Webb and Malia Manuel remain in contention for the Fiji Women’s Pro title.

Last contest before summer goes off today at Ala Moana Bowls

The Triple Crown of Surfing is still a ways off, but Hawaii’s only professional surf contest until winter starts today, running through the weekend at Ala Moana Bowls on Oahu. Having been upgraded to a QS 1,000 event this year, the Local Motion Surf Into Summer Pro will feature many of Hawaii’s most polished local surfers, as well as some youngsters hoping to gain some experience and maybe even a couple of Qualifying Series points.

For the third time this year, Malia Manuel is into the quarterfinals and she’ll be hoping for back-to-back semifinal appearances when action resumes at the Oi Rio Women’s Pro. Coming into this contest, South African Jordy Smith had won all three of his first-round heats on this year’s Championship Tour. Sebastian Zietz managed to outwork and outmaneuver his counterpart in their three-man heat to move directly into round three of the Oi Rio Pro in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Saquarema something of a Brazilian flop for Hawaii surfers

The contest at Saquarema may not be over, but for our intents and purposes, it is. The QS 10,000 Quiksilver Pro Saquarema in Itauna, Brazil, got halfway through the fourth round on Saturday, but none of the nine Hawaii competitors remain in the field. Last man standing honors went to Maui’s Granger Larsen, who lost to Nathan Yeomans in the fourth round.

Suffering Saquarema! Not a stellar start for Hawaii surfers in Brazil

While the Kauai Red Raiders were notching a 14-1 blowout win in their Division II baseball quarterfinal game on Oahu, the starting nine for Hawaii at the Quiksilver Pro Saquarema wasn’t having nearly the same success in Brazil.

Sunday Surf Report: Moniz flies up leaderboard with first-ever QS win

Josh Moniz jumped 146 spots in the rankings by winning the first-ever Martinique Surf Pro on Saturday in the Caribbean. As a Team Hawaii regular and one of the world’s top juniors, Moniz makes his way all the way to 14th place in the Men’s Qualifying Series rankings with the 3,000 points awarded to him. The top 10 will earn a spot on the Championship Tour at year’s end, so the young Moniz may find himself entering more QS events than he had anticipated with the possibility of qualifying now a reality.

Florence falls in final as de Souza wins Margie's for gold jersey

Even after a pair of subpar results, a win Thursday would have pushed John John Florence into the top five for the season. But while his surfing was lethal as always, a few late falls kept a couple of potentially huge scores out of the excellent range and he had to settle for a runner-up finish at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro. Brazil’s Adriano de Souza came away with a 17.53 to 16.87 win to move into the world’s No. 1 ranking. He’ll grab the gold jersey after three top-three results Down Under.

Manuel cracks the semis at Margie's for year's best result

Coming off a disappointing result at Bells Beach, Malia Manuel put that throwaway score behind her and got her first semifinal appearance of the season during Tuesday’s finals day action at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Western Australia. It was a dramatic day for Manuel, who made the semis in three of her final six contests of 2014, but needed a good result to move back toward the top of the 2015 rankings.

Moore of the same: Carissa continues to dominate Aussie events

Two events down and it’s two wins for Carissa Moore, who is setting herself up nicely for a run at her third world title. Moore topped Stephanie Gilmore in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach final to keep her spot atop the women’s Championship Tour leaderboard.

Moore, Ho heading to women's quarters

It's a funky wave and a cool trophy, but it's not a great event this year for Kauai's three pros on the Championship Tour. Tuesday was a lay day for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach but the quarterfinals are set for both the men's and women's sides of the draw.

Bell not tolling for Seabass as heat win moves him into round 3

The final heat of the second round was a big one for Sebastian Zietz as Kauai’s lone surfer on the men’s world tour watched plenty of surprises in tough conditions throughout the day before having to face dangerous Brazilian rookie Italo Ferreira. But when he finally got into the water, the third-year pro showed why he’s been so solid in these situations during his career.
