KALAHEO — A night’s rest can do wonders, and the basketball teams from Barrow, Alaska, proved that, Wednesday afternoon.

Curren Dillberg came into the game in the fourth period and finished with a dozen points, including a critical overtime bucket, to lead Papalina to a 28-26 win over the Under 12 Barrow boys in overtime.

Jalene Kanayuruak finished with a game-high 12 points and Jaleen Simmonds added 10 points to lead the Barrow girls to a 41-26 win over the Kamikaze in the second game at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.

The Alaskans, under the coaching of former Kapa‘a High School player Roland Hepa, wrapped up their three-day stay by playing basketball coordinated through the efforts of Kalaheo Neighborhood Center site director Clyde Vito.

During the Tuesday outing, the Barrow girls escaped the Kaulupono challenge with critical fourth quarter free throws by Simmonds, and on Wednesday, the Barrow girls, unrelenting on defense, handed the Kamikaze a rare loss.

The Alaskan wahine jumped out to an early lead behind a three-ball and bucket from Jalene Kanayuruak while the defense held Kamikaze to just a pair in the opening quarter, a bucket from Mahea Hanie-Grace, the redshirts’ sparkplug.

That Barrow momentum continued into the second quarter when Simmonds launched a pair from outside the three-point arc and Jalene Kanayuruak added another trey en route to Barrow taking a 22-9 halftime lead.

Following Jalene Kanayuruak and Simmonds’ lead, Lynette Hepa, one of the taller girls on the floor, finished with eight points, Frieda Kuleak, rebounded from a ball handling accident, finished with five. Hilary Lowery added four second-half points and a pair from Nicole Smith rounded out the win.

Bristy Ann Agu topped the Kamikaze scoring, entering the books in the second period, with seven points. Hanie-Grace and Kawehi Louis-Diamond each finished with six points and Alexis Hernandez added five marks.

Dillberg nailed five fourth quarter buckets to pull Papalina from a 20-11 third quarter deficit to force the overtime on a 24-24 stalemate.

During the three-minute overtime, Dillberg was joined by a bucket from tall man Nate Herbig to ice the 28-26 win.

Dillberg finished the outing with 12 points followed by Jassem Cumlat adding eight points, including a three-ball in the second period. Herbig finished with five points.

Leroy Long, netting Barrow’s sole OT bucket, was joined by Makana Ahgeak to lead the Alaska boys with eight points apiece. Kevin Goodwin finished with six points and pairs from Robert Kanayuruak and Keoni Hepa rounded out the effort.

The Barrow teams leave for Kona, Thursday, to take part in the World Youth Basketball Tournament that feature an international field of teams.
