LIHU‘E — A large crowd of people and their furry best friends turned out for Sunday’s Adoptoberfest at Kaua‘i Humane Society in Puhi. Several left with new companions.

On an average Saturday, Volunteer Coordinator Pam Woolway says the Humane Society adopts out three animals. During Adoptoberfest, 18 animals (5 kittens and 13 dogs) were adopted and went home with new families.

“What was really cool was the majority were adult dogs,” Woolway said.

Equally as important was that all the dogs up for adoption got exposure to the community while walking through the crowd with KHS volunteers, according to Woolway.

“I feel like we are going to have even more adoptions,” she said. “It was a really good day.”

The adoption event and fundraiser included a variety of canine games and contests, a Keiki Corner, prize drawings, food and product vendors, a dog wash and much more.

Approximately 200 people attended the event, which also served as a final goodbye to KHS Executive Director Shannon Blizzard, who is relocating to Kansas City after a year on Kaua‘i.

“She really over the last year has increased our capacity for lifesaving and put us on the path to continue to do so utilizing resources that were not previously available to us,” Community Outreach Coordinator Kate Krieg said.

Ron Wiley from KONG radio served as emcee and broadcast live from Freddie’s Dog Park.

He also led a KHS alumni dog parade and several canine contests, including best costume, best trick, fastest tail wag, best kisser and pet/owner look-a-like.

Contest winners went home with $25 KHS gift cards.

Woolway encourages anyone that is interested in adoption to come visit KHS’s adoption center.

“There are still some major rock star animals here,” she said. “We always have lots of puppies and every breed imaginable.”

The KHS adoption center is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through Monday.
