Motorists cautioned for Kaua‘i Marathon traffic

The Third Annual Kaua‘i Marathon will affect traffic in and around the Koloa, Po‘ipu, Lawai and Kalaheo areas, Sunday.

The marathon leaves Po‘ipu Road fronting the Po‘ipu Shopping Village at 6 a.m. and there will be some lane and road closures between 5 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., states a release from The Kaua‘i Marathon.

Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and patience to ensure the safety of both athletes and motorists while traveling through the Southside, Sunday.

Traffic flow will be monitored by the Kaua‘i Police Department with help from Garden Island Security throughout the 26.2-mile course.

Road Closures:

Po‘ipu Road will be closed from Kapili Road to the Koloa Bypass Road from 5:30 a.m. until 6:15 a.m., these times being approximate.

Ho‘onani Road will be closed from 5 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. from Lawai Road to Kapili Road. Traffic flowing in and out of the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort will use Kapili Road.

Koloa Road inbound lane from Highway 50 will be closed from 6:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The outbound lane from Koloa to Highway 50 will be open temporarily until 7:50 a.m. at which time it will close until 10:30 a.m.

Lauoho Road, Waha Road and Pu‘u Road will be close to through traffic from 7:15 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Residents living in these areas are advised to use extreme caution.

‘Oma‘o Road from Highway 50 to Koloa Road will be closed to through traffic from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. Residents living in this affected area are advised to use extreme caution.

Partial Closures:

The Koloa Bypass Road outbound lane will be closed from 5:30 to 8 a.m. The inbound lane will be open to Po‘ipu-bound traffic only during this time.

Maluhia Road from the Koloa Bypass Road to Highway 50 will be closed to outbound traffic from 6:15 to 8 a.m. The inbound lane of Maluhia Road will be open at all times. However, it will be slowed from 6 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. All traffic on Maluhia Road and the Koloa Bypass Road will return to normal by approximately 8:30 a.m. Traffic flow will by monitored by KPD at both Maluhia and ‘Oma‘o roads.

Highway 50, or Kaumuali‘i Highway, from Maluhia Road west to ‘Oma‘o Road will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic in the mauka, or mountainside, lane from 6:30 a.m. until approximately 8:30 a.m. Traffic flow will be monitored by KPD at both Maluhia and ‘Oma‘o roads.

Papalina Road from Waha to Pu‘u Road will be restricted to alternating one-way traffic in the mauka, or mountain side, lane from 7:15 a.m. until noon. Traffic flow will be monitored by KPD at both the Waha Road and Pu‘u Road ends.

Marathon runners return to Koloa via Papalina, Waha, Lauoho and Koloa roads and the affected roads will reopen once all of the runners have passed.

The Kukui‘ula Bypass Road will be closed to all inbound traffic from 6:15 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Outbound traffic from the Po‘ipu Roundabout to Koloa Road will remain open.

The Po‘ipu Roundabout will be heavily impacted and traffic will be slowed considerably from 6:45 a.m. until 2 p.m. as runners enter the roundabout from the Kukui‘ula Bypass Road.

Westbound Lawai Road and Spouting Horn traffic will be re-routed through The Shops at Kuku‘iula and out the back entrance at Lawai Road. Only Po‘ipu road traffic will be able to proceed through the roundabout.

Traffic will flow in and out of all South Shore regions, but The Kaua‘i Marathon committee recommends that travel in these areas on Sunday be limited from 5 a.m. until approximately 2:30 p.m.
