ANAHOLA — Despite an extensive two-day search by the Kaua‘i Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard, a 34-year-old surfer who went missing Friday afternoon in Anahola at a spot called “Crack 14” located around the bend from Kuna Bay has not been found, county officials said Saturday evening.

Fire officials said they would reassess the situation today to determine what course of action to take, a news release states.

Firefighters from the Kapa’a fire station and rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e fire station conducted a ground search Saturday spanning some 2.5 miles between “Crack 14” and Kealia Beach, while lifeguards searched the water on a JetSki.

Coast Guard personnel covered some 200 square miles in a C130 airplane and a helicopter, utilizing models that determine current drifts.

The surfer, a Moloa‘a man, was reported missing at around 1:41 p.m. Friday when he did not return to shore after losing his board.
