Kapa’a High School English and economics teacher, Christine Farina and student and CEO of “A Yacht of Fun”, Kasa Pohiva, received a generous grant from the Annie Sinclair Knudsen Memorial Fund, the second consecutive year the Virtual Enterprise class has received this grant, an announcement states.
The students of Farina’s Virtual Enterprise class created “A Yacht of Fun,” a business bent on developing fun ways for visiting and local teens to have a good time without getting into trouble. The name explains it all — “A Yacht of Fun” will be a yacht filled with dozens of activities and adventures for teens to experience and explore as well as learn about the Hawaiian culture.
The Annie Sinclair Knudsen Memorial Fund supports projects and programs that benefit the people, flora, fauna and charitable organizations of Kaua‘i. The fund was created by Ruth Hanner to honor her grandmother in 1987. This permanent memorial represents their shared love for Kaua‘i.
California Virtual Enterprise is a high school program for students interested in learning more about work ethics and what it’s like to work in a real business setting. Kapa‘a High School as the first and only school in Hawai‘i to be part of this program. The students are given the opportunity to create and design their own business. Each student is interviewed by local businessmen and given a job within the company. They work along with their classmates to expand and build their enterprise. All of the hard work is displayed on the California Virtual Enterprise Website, where the students sell their products and services on a virtual mall and have the opportunity to purchase products and services from other schools across our nation.
