ANINI — John Robert Garrick, a homeless man, reportedly drove a Ford passenger van into the water Friday afternoon at Anini Beach Park, a county news release said Saturday evening.
Witnesses told police that Garrick was driving down Anini Road in the van at around 1:39 p.m. when he turned into the park and accelerated toward the ocean.
Garrick then drove off a retaining wall, went airborne and landed in shallow water.
He reportedly continued to drive the van until it became stuck in the sand. Garrick then exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
Police located Garrick nearby and arrested him for reckless driving, second degree reckless endangering and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Garrick is being held in Police Cellblock, unable to post bail.
The van was removed from the beach and brought to higher ground.
