LIHU‘E — Three Kaua‘i 4-H Livestock Club members fared well at the recent Hawai‘i State Fair held on the grounds of Bishop Museum on O‘ahu, July 17-19.
Senior member Cassandra Kawamura was announced as the winner of the Herdsmanship award for Overall Senior and Senior Steer Project for her market steer that was shipped over for the fair.
En route to being named the overall senior, Cassandra finished with the Grand Champion honor for her steer, earning the Showmanship award in the steer judging as well.
Her market lamp finished second in the heavyweight division and placed fourth overall in the market lamb competition. She finished with a third place showing for showmanship in the lamb judging.
Those honors also earned her the Timmy Cambra Memorial Buckle from Maui.
Her brother Matthew also finished with a Grand Champion rosette for his market lamb entry. Matthew took first in the heavyweight market lamb judging en route to his lamb earning Grand Champion honors. He finished with a fourth place for showmanship in the Junior division lamb judging.
Thalia Souza, a consistent strong contender at the state level, submitted a market steer and a market lamb for judging at the state fair.
Souza finished with a sixth place showing for her steer with a second place showmanship rosette in the steer judging.
Her lamb was awarded third place for heavyweight lamb, fifth place in the overall lamb judging, and the veteran 4-Her captured first place in the lamb showmanship judging.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported us and helped us get to the state fair,” Cassandra said in an e-mail. “We all had a good time and learned new things from the experience.”
Cassandra said Jurassic Kahili Ranch donated her calf so she could raise it to championship status. Medeiros Farms was the breeder for Souza’s steer.
Image Lamb was the provider for Matthew and Souza’s lambs, and Robert Kawamura bred Cassandra’s lamb as well as provided support during the growth of the lambs.
Cassandra said Young Brothers donated the shipping of the animals from Kaua‘i to O‘ahu and there were several people that offered the use of the shipping containers as well as hauling the livestock from the Honolulu pier to the fairgrounds.
The Kaua‘i Livestock Committee provided shavings for the livestock and M. Kawamura Farm Enterprise helped with the feed for the award-winning livestock.
The Kawamura ‘ohana, Souza, and other members of the 4-H Livestock Club will be in action when the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau opens its four-day run at the Vidinha Stadium fairgrounds staring Aug. 27.
The public is invited to view the 4-H Livestock Club members and their livestock in action during the judging and auction phases.
