Kaua‘i’s taiko voice joins worldwide song of peace
WAIMEA — “We may have our differences, but we’re all brothers,” Lyle Ueunten of the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko said Saturday night.
Ueunten was joined by six other taiko drummers from the Kaua‘i contingent that became part of the Chikyu Kyodai world-wide event.
With the help of the Waimea Higashi Hongwanji that allowed the bon dancing to pause briefly, Kaua‘i became part of an international effort by the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko to promote international friendship.
At 8:05 p.m., Hawaiian Standard Time, the O‘ahu counterpart of the taiko group paused activity at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel as the taiko voices became one with other groups from Okinawa, Japan, the taiko group’s main headquarters, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, the United States Mainland, Maui and the Big Island.
