As the wind-blown rains continue to fall on Kaua‘i, creating serious flooding issues in some parts of the island, officials are working to reopen roads and bridges.

The Kalihiwai Bridge has been reopened on the North Shore, according to police dispatch. The Hanalei Bridge remains closed.

The Red Cross is manning an emergency shelter at Kilauea Neighborhood Center, 2460 Keneke St., for residents who were evacuated from their homes. Anyone planning to go to the Kilauea shelter will find minimum accommodations — a dry floor, potable water and a bathroom, a county news release says.

Three households, including five residents, in Hanalei Valley were evacuated due to flooded homes. Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel took them to safety in a private Zodiac around noon.

A dead cow that washed up on Lydgate Beach around 11:30 a.m. was removed by Public Works personnel, according to a county news release.

On the Eastside, Kuamo‘o Road has been reopened.

Several roads were closed in the Kawaihau District around 1:30 p.m., including Haua‘ala Road in Keapana, Kawaihau Road near Kahuna Bridge, Opaeka‘a Road in the vicinity of Puupilo Road, Opaeka‘a Bridge, and Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of Kalihiwai Bridge.

The Kaua‘i Emergency Operations Center was partially activated this morning. This involves Civil Defense, Hawai‘i Air National Guard, Kaua‘i Fire Department, Kaua‘i Police Department and Public Works, according to a county news release.

More information will be posted online as it becomes available. E-mail photos and information to neagle@kauaipubco.com.
