LIHUE — One of the most popular spots for protests and political candidates to wave signs has been off limits and blocked off by yellow tape for about a week.
Tim Sakahara, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said yellow caution tape was put around the grassy area at the intersection of Ahukini Road and Kapule Highway, near Lihue Airport, due to damaged landscape and broken sprinkler equipment from vehicles.
“The public is reminded that parking on the grass in the area is restricted,” he said.
Since the caution tape has been placed on the corner, many political candidates have been waving signs across the street just down from the airport’s entrance.
