How many contracts does the county have for the towing of abandoned or derelict vehicles? How many tow trucks are available to handle these vehicles and how are vehicles scheduled for pick-up/disposal?
The Kauai Police Department has a contract for the towing of derelict vehicles and a contract for the towing of abandoned vehicles. The contract requires that the company has two trucks, a wrecker and a flat bed, and both companies have more than just those two to utilize.
Vehicles are scheduled for pick-up after a police report is generated and the proper posting that is required by Hawaii State Law is completed.
Derelict vehicles can be towed immediately as opposed to abandoned vehicles that need to be posted for at least 24 hours before being towed away. After that’s taken care of an officer or the abandoned vehicle coordinator must return to the location, document their observations in a supplementary police report and if still legally able to tow away, a vehicle seizure form is completed and sent to the tow company via email and text message. A phone call is also made to the towing company for notification. The towing company will then schedule a driver and truck to go to the location and tow the vehicle away and drop it off at Puhi Metals Recycling Facility.
