KILAUEA — Kahiliholo Road in Kilauea has collapsed after being damaged by Kauai’s April floods, and has created a dam, blocking the waterfall along Kuhio Highway, just before the Kalihiwai River.
The road was closed by County of Kauai because of safety concerns after the flood.
“The Roads Division is mobilizing to address the blockage to allow water to flow,” said Acting County Engineer Lyle Tabata. The division mobilized Monday to address the collapse and is finding a contractor to fix the road. The project will start as soon as materials have been purchased and a contractor lined up.
“Once a contractor gets the bid for the project, the contractor is tentatively scheduled to work on the project a month after the bid,” Tabata said.
When completed, Tabata said the road will have an improved, precast, concrete, ox culvert design.
The project is expected to last for two to three months once a contractor has been selected.
