LIHUE — The arraignment for a woman arrested for alegedly violating the county’s new bus stop rules was continued Wednesday because she was not on Kauai.
District Court Judge Michael Soong continued the proceedings for El Aina Danine until April 19.
“She does have another court date on April 19, and we were also informed by the state hospital that she was not physically here,” Soong said.
For over a year, Danine, 53, lived at a Kapaa bus stop on Kuhio Highway fronting the Kapaa Neighborhood Center. The county’s Transportation Agency adopted new bus stop rules at the beginning of the year. In late March, Danine was cited for not following them.
The new rules state that county bus stops are closed from midnight to 4 a.m. Occupying a bus stop in a manner that inhibits adequate public use is also prohibited.
Danine came to Kauai from Virginia on a mission to build a Christian church on the North Shore.
While some supported her with food and money, others said she should not have been allowed to take up a bus stop bench, preventing others from using it.
