A man reportedly drowned Tuesday afternoon on the North Shore.
The roving lifeguards of the Kauai Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau, firefighters and the KFD helicopter were dispatched to an area offshore of Hanakapiai Beach, where a man was reported to be about a quarter of a mile from the beach in rough surf, according to a county spokesperson.
Rescue 3, aboard Air 1, located the man, who was unresponsive when they recovered him. He was flown to a landing zone at Ke‘e Beach, where he could not be revived. He was then transferred to responding medics.

The U S Coast Guard also responded to this event with a helicopter, a cutter from Oahu and a boat from Station Kauai. It’s another tragedy caused by ignorance (not knowing how powerful the ocean is) and perhaps a failure to listen to advise to stay away from the water when there’s high surf.
